What Do Props People Do?
Props are a very important part of every show, and the Props crew makes sure that every physical prop is ready for the production.
The props crew is responsible for the following:
- Reading the script and talking with the director to decide what props are needed for the show
- Drawing up a props list and finding the props needed for the show
- Coordinating with the sound and lighting crews if there are props that require specific lighting and sound needs
- Working with each actor to know which props they need, and when they need them
- Staying within the props budget, if pieces need to be purchased
- Keeping all props safe and clean, particularly if they are borrowed
- Checking the onstage props and props table before each show
- Having props ready for actors if they need to carry them onstage, and returning them to the props table when actors carry them off.
- Determining how many props people have to be at each show, and coordinating a schedule so that a crew is there each night
- Attending set strike, and returning all props to either the storage room or the proper owners after the production run ends
