Our 2025 Holiday Production:

A Christmas Story

Humorist Jean Shepherd's memoir of growing up in the Midwest in the 1940s follows 9-year-old Ralphie Parker in his quest to get a genuine Red Ryder BB gun under the tree for Christmas. Ralphie pleads his case before his mother, his teacher and even Santa Claus himself at Higbee's Department Store. The consistent response: "You'll shoot your eye out!"

All the elements from the beloved motion picture are here, including the family's temperamental exploding furnace; Scut Farkas, the school bully; the boys' experiment with a wet tongue on a cold lamppost; the Little Orphan Annie decoder pin; Ralphie's father winning a lamp shaped like a woman's leg in a net stocking; Ralphie's fantasy scenarios and more. A Christmas Story is destined to become a theatrical holiday perennial.

*MAIN CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS:

Ralphie:  (Male, presenting age 10)
Cute and winsome, but not precious. Bright, but not precocious. A regular 10 year old kid you wouldn’t mind having as a next-door neighbor. He’s determined and he has a wonderful imagination.

Ralph/Narrator: (Male, presenting Age 40+)
The warm, and charismatic on-stage narrator of the show, based on the original author of the book that inspired A Christmas Story and the original narrator of the 1983 film.

The Old Man: (Male, presenting age 30-40ish)
A guy with a good heart, though it’s buried beneath a sometimes gruff exterior. He loves his family but doesn’t overtly show it. He usually expects the worst but is capable of excitement if the situation warrants.

Mother: (Female, presenting age 30-40ish)
More in charge of the family than the Old Man, but she would never let him know it. She is warm and affable, but not a pushover. A vibrant woman, she is always busy, especially in the kitchen. She is the secret engine that keeps the family running, keeping the household together with an impressive balancing act.

Randy: (Male, presenting Age 9)
Ralphie’s younger brother. Cute, cuddly, and whiny. Admires Ralphie but won’t admit it. He’s at the stage of childhood wherein he seems opposed to everything, but he’s still loveable – not a brat.

Miss Shields:
(Female, presenting age 18+)
Ralphie’s teacher. Prim, proper, stern when necessary, but warm and funny when needed.

Schwartz:
(Male, presenting age 10-12)
One of Ralphie’s best friends. He’s a bit of a know-it-all.

Flick:
(Male, presenting age 10-12)
